WINNIPEG, MB - The AHL's defending Calder Cup Champions, the Cleveland Monsters, proudly powered by Constellation, were defeated by the Manitoba Moose on Thursday at MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB, by a final score of 7-3. With the loss, the Monsters fell to 3-6 overall this season and with a .333 points percentage, currently sit alone in eighth place in the AHL's Central Division standings.
Cleveland's Justin Scott started the scoring for the Monsters with his second of the season, an even-strength tally at 6:35 of the first assisted by Nick Moutrey, but Manitoba tied the game at 14:15 of the opening frame with a five-on-five Darcy Murphy score. In the second, the Moose claimed a 2-1 edge when Peter Stoykewych posted an even-strength goal at 8:29, but the Monsters tied the game with a Ryan Craig power-play tally at 14:18, set up by Daniel Zaar and Alex Broadhurst. Manitoba capped the middle-frame scoring at 16:48, however, when Ryan Olsen posted a five-on-five tally to make it 3-2 Moose.
In the third, Cody Goloubef managed to level the score at three apiece when the Cleveland defenseman, aided by assists from Jaime Sifers and Broadhurst, banked an even-strength marker off the skates of Moose defenseman Kevin Czuczman, but the Moose responded with four unanswered goals the rest of the way, from Quinton Howden at 8:44 at even-strength, Nic Petan on the power-play at 14:13, Howden shorthanded and into an empty net at 16:24, and a second empty-netter from Jack Roslovic at 19:23, to claim a 7-3 victory.
Joonas Korpisalo fell to 0-1-0 in net for the Monsters this year despite making 19 saves in his season debut, while Eric Comrie improved to 3-2 between the pipes for the Moose by virtue of a 31-save performance.
Next up for the Monsters, it's a Saturday rematch vs. Manitoba with full coverage, live from MTS Centre in Winnipeg, MB, underway at 8:00 pm on 99X and the Monsters Hockey Network.
