Moncton, NB â The Moncton Wildcats thumped the PEI Rocket 7 â 2 on Friday night before 3,669 at the Moncton Coliseum to move into sole possession of first place in the Atlantic Division and into a two-way tie for second place overall in the QMJHL.
While Moncton improved their record to 3 â 1 â 0 (6 pts), PEI suffered their first setback, to see their record drop to 2 â 1 â 1 (5 pts). Moncton had period leads of 3 â 1 and 6 â 1. Once again, Steve Bernier (4th, 5th) led the scoring parade with two goals and one assist, while Ryan Salvis (2nd, 3rd) chipped in with a pair of markers, with singles coming from Bruce Graham (2nd), Adam Pineault (3rd) and Stephane Goulet (1st). Martins Karsums also had a three-point night, by adding three assists, while Guillaume Veilleux added a pair, with single helpers coming from Graham, Pineault, Goulet, Nathan Saunders, Josh Hepditch and Jason Demers.
Replying for the Rocket were David Laliberte (2nd) and Jimmy Bonneau (2nd). Moncton outshot PEI 51 â 29, including 19 â 14 in the first, 19 â 9 in the second and 13 â 6 in the third.
Corey Crawford blocked 27 of 29 shots he faced to improve his record to 2 â 1 â 0, while Ryan Mior allowed seven goals on 51 shots to suffer the setback in his first start of the season. Moncton was 2 for 7 on the powerplay, while PEI went 0 for 8. The game's three stars were #1 â Martins Karsums, #2 â Steve Bernier and #3 â Bruce Graham.
Moncton returns to action on Sunday when they host the Lewiston MAINEiacs in a 4 pm contest at the Moncton Coliseum.
Wildtracks â Sixteen year old rookie defenseman Jason Demers was a team-leading +4 in the contest, while rookie center Wesley Welcher won 8 of 11 face-offs.....Martins Karsums led all shooters with eight, while Bruce Graham had seven and Ryan Salvis six.
