Moncton, NB â Moncton Wildcats opened a 4 â 1 lead by early in the second period and went on to defeat the League leading Chicoutimi Sagueneens 5 â 4 before 3,241 at the Moncton Coliseum on Sunday. Wildcats had period leads of 2 â 1 and 4 â 2.
Bruce Graham (4th, 5th) led the Wildcats' attack with a pair of markers, while singles came from Stephane Goulet (4th), Charles Bergeron (2nd) and Luke Pelham (2nd, PP). Martins Karsums and Ryan Salvis each added two assists for the Wildcats, with single helpers coming from Oskars Bartulis, Adam Pineault, Nathan Saunders, Josh Hepditch and Steve Bernier. Nicolas Marcotte (4th, 5th) led the Sagueneens with a pair of goals, with singles coming from David Descharnais (5th) and Stanislav Lascek (7th). Moncton outshot Chicoutimi 35 â 33, including 15 â 8 in the first and 14 â 12 in the second, while Chicoutimi held a 13 â 6 advantage in the third.
Moncton's Corey Crawford improved his record to 6 â 1 â 1, as he blocked 31 of 35 shots, while Chicoutimi's Brandon Verge suffered the setback (2 â 2 â 0) as he allowed three goals on 27 shots in 55:09. He relieved starter Alexandre Vincent who allowed two goals on eight shots in 4:25 of the first period. Moncton was 1 for 2 on the powerplay, while Chicoutimi went 1 for 6. The game's three stars were #1 - Stanislav Lascek, #2 â Bruce Graham and #3 â Martins Karsums.
Moncton improves their record to 7 â 2 â 1 â 0 (15 pts) and moves into a tie with the PEI Rocket (7 â 3 â 1 â 0) for first place in the Atlantic Division and a three-way tie for second place in the League with the Gatineau Olympiques (7 â 1 â 1 â 0). Chicoutimi remains in first place in the Eastern Division and the League overall with a record of 8 â 2 â 1 â 1 (18 pts).
Moncton finishes their home stand on Friday, October 15th when they host the PEI Rocket at 7 pm at the Moncton Coliseum.
