Moncton, NB â In a battle of last season's finalists, the Moncton Wildcats defeated the League champion Gatineau Olympiques 2 â 0 before 5,940 at the Moncton Coliseum on Friday. Moncton led 1 â 0 after the first period and added the insurance marker midway through the third, to move into a two-way tie for first place in the QMJHL, with the Chicoutimi Sagueneens, who dropped a 4 â 3 decision to the visiting Halifax Mooseheads in overtime. Moncton now has a record of 12 â 4 â 1 â 0 (25 pts), while Chicoutimi has a record of 10 â 3 â 3 â 2 (25 pts.) Steve Bernier notched the eventual game winner at 18:52 of the first period, with Kevin Glode and Adam Blanchette drawing assists. After playing though a scoreless second period, Bruce Graham notched the insurance marker at 10:17 of the third period, on a set-up from Ryan Salvis. Bernier and Graham both notched their team-leading ninth goals of the season. Goaltender Corey Crawford blocked all 16 shots he faced to record his league leading fourth shutout of the season and increased his career to nine. Moncton outshot Gatineau 41 â 16, including 16 â 8 in the first, 9 â 4 in the second and 16 â 4 in the third. Crawford improved his record to 10 â 3 â 1, while David Tremblay blocked 39 shots to see his record drop to 8 â 4 â 2. Moncton was 0 for 4 on the powerplay, while Gatineau went 0 for 3. Moncton remains in first place in the Atlantic Division, while Gatineau remains in first place in the Western Division with a record of 9 â 6 â 2 â 0 (20 pts). Moncton improved their home record to 9 â 2 â 0 (18 pts) while Gatineau's road record fell to 3 â 4 â 0 (6 pts). The game's three stars were #1 â Steve Bernier, #2 â Bruce Graham and #3 â David Tremblay. Moncton closes out its home stand on Sunday when they host the Rimouski Oceanic in a special 2 pm Halloween contest.
