
Monarchs Sign Backman, Horvat

MANCHESTER, NH - The Manchester Monarchs, the primary affiliate of the 2014 Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings, have signed right wing Sean Backman and left wing Ryan Horvat to American Hockey League contracts, Monarchs Director of Hockey Operations Hubie McDonough announced on Wednesday.
Backman, 28, collected a career-high 16 assists and 26 points (10-1626) in 71 games for the Monarchs during the 2013-14 season. Prior to joining Manchester, he recorded 18 goals and 21 assists for 39 points and 60 penalty minutes in 133 games with the AHL's Bridgeport Sound Tigers from 2011-13. The 5-foot-8, 165-pound native of White Plains, New York, split his first professional season, 2010-11, between the AHL's Texas Stars and the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads. He collected 23 points (7-1623) and 20 penalty minutes in 67 games with the Stars, and four points (2-24) and four penalty minutes in five games with the Steelheads. Backman spent four years at Yale University (2006-10) where he registered 77 goals and 49 assists for 126 points and 110 penalty minutes in 122 games.
Horvat, 21, joins the Monarchs after playing the last five seasons with the Ontario Hockey League's Guelph Storm. During the 2013-14 season, the 6-foot, 195-pound native of Simcoe, Ontario, recorded a career-high 15 goals, and tied a career-high with 29 points (15-1429) in 59 games with the Storm. Horvat also collected seven points (3-47) and 19 penalty minutes in 20 games as Guelph won the 2014 OHL championship. In 185 career games with the Storm, he registered 84 points (32-5284) and 182 penalty minutes from 2009-14.
