A SEASON TO REMEMBER

The Monarchs ended the 2016-17 season with a record of 37-24-7-4, and clinched a Kelly Cup Playoff berth. The team made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, but fell to the South Carolina Stingrays in a hard-fought Game 7 at SNHU Arena. In all, the Monarchs moved 31 players to the AHL over the course of the season.

WELCOME BACK

The Worcester Railers open their first season in franchise history against the Monarchs tonight. The Railers are the ECHL affiliate of the New York Islanders (NHL), and the Bridgeport Sound Tigers (AHL).

While the team is new to the league, it already has an established following after playing in the AHL as the Worcester Sharks. Like the Manchester AHL franchise that moved west, the Worcester Sharks relocated to San Jose, Calif., to share the SAP Center with their parent organization, the San Jose Sharks. The AHL team changed its name to the San Jose Barracuda.

Tonight's game will be the third matchup between the Monarchs and Railers, but the first of the regular season. Manchester won both pre-season games in a home-and-home series, and outscored Worcester, 9-4.

THE NEW GUYS

The Monarchs made moves this offseason and signed eight new players to the roster for the upcoming season. The new faces who will sport black, silver and white are: Michael Doherty, Jonathan Racine, Tommy Kelley, Sam Kurker, Tony Cameranesi, Joel Lowry, Evan Cowley and Martin Nemcik.

Doherty (Yale), Kelley (Boston University), Kurker (Northeastern) and Cowley (University of Denver) are rookies straight out of college, while Lowry, Racine, Cameranesi and Nemcik come to Manchester from various professional teams around the ECHL and AHL.

LEITING THE LAMP

Matt Leitner is set to return to the team for his third year. During the 2016-17 regular season, Leitner led the team in points, racking up 53 on 14 goals and 39 assists. Not to mention the 22 points (8g-14a) he tallied in 19 Kelly Cup Playoff games.

ALLOW ME TO INTRODUCE MYSELF

Colton Saucerman appeared on the ECHL's rookie leaderboard for his special teams capabilities in 2016-17. Saucerman posted the second-most power-play assists (15) and ranked fifth among rookies in man-advantage points (18).

IT WASN'T BUILT IN A DAY

Ashton Rome was recently named captain of the Railers, and will face-off against his former team tonight at the DCU Center. Rome, 31, signed with the Monarchs in mid-December of 2016, and made his presence felt immediately. The veteran scored 18 points (12g, 6a) in 36 regular season games and added 12 points (9g, 3a) in 19 Kelly Cup Playoff games.

Rome returns to Worcester after playing parts of three seasons in The Woo from 2006-08.

QUEST FOR THE KELLY CUP

The Monarchs are set to make another run at the Kelly Cup. The team has clinched a playoff spot every year since moving to the ECHL in the 2015-16 season, and has only missed post-season play once in the 16-year history of the team.
