Rio Grande Valley Vipers News Release
MCALLEN, TEXAS - The NBA Development League Champion Rio Grande Valley Vipers announced today that assistant coach Paul Mokeski is joining the British National Team coaching staff.
"We're excited to bring him on board, considering what he has to offer. I've gotten to work with him this year, and the results are fairly obvious. I think he'll fit in well with our staff," said Vipers head coach Chris Finch, who is also the head coach of the British National Team.
Mokeski will serve as an assistant coach starting in July when the British National Team takes part in the European Qualifiers. He joins Nick Nurse, who was the head coach of the Iowa Energy for the last three years and one of the head coaches in the 2009 NBA Development League All-Star Game, on the coaching staff.
"I'm excited about continuing my work with Coach Finch and to be given the opportunity to get more international experience. Last year I was with the Jamaican National Team and really enjoyed it," Mokeski said.
Mokeski will spend five weeks as an assistant coach with the Jamaican National Team in June during a Centrobasket Tournament in the Dominican Republic before leaving for Great Britain.
A second round pick (20th pick, 42nd overall) of the Houston Rockets in the 1979 NBA Draft, Mokeski played in 12 games for the Rockets during the 1979-80 season before moving onto Detroit, Cleveland, Milwaukee and Golden State during an 11-year career that saw him make the playoffs in each of his last nine seasons, advancing as far as the Eastern Conference Finals twice.
A native of Spokane, Washington, Mokseki played his college basketball at the University of Kansas before playing in the NBA. Mokeski coached in the Continental Basketball Association and American Basketball Association before becoming an assistant coach for the NBA D-League Fort Worth Flyers for the 2006-07 season. He spent the 2007-08 season as an assistant coach for the Charlotte Bobcats before returning to the NBA D-League during the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach for the Anaheim Arsenal.
