Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Modesto Nuts got some great work from starting pitcher Christian Bergman on Sunday afternoon, taking the series-opener at The Epicenter, with a 6-1 victory over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.

Bergman (5-4) allowed one run, a Chris Jacobs homer, on just four hits over seven innings, while the Modesto offense peppered Quakes' starter Garrett Gould for four runs on nine hits over six-plus innings.

Coming off a win in his last start, Gould was unable to sustain the momentum, as he allowed two runs in the second, as Modesto took a 2-0 lead.

Gould (1-5) worked around base-runners in five of his first six innings, but held Modesto to just the two runs entering the seventh. Jayson Langfels and Dustin Garneau opened the inning with back-to-back doubles, two of Modesto's six doubles on the day. With runners at second and third and no outs, Gould was removed in favor of recent bullpen addition, Carlos Frias. Frias struggled though, as he allowed a two-run single to the first hitter he faced, Cristhian Adames, as Modesto made it 4-0.

After Jacobs' fifth homer of the year put the Quakes on the board in the bottom of the seventh, Frias gave up two of his own in the eighth, as Modesto took a commanding 6-1 lead.

The Quakes only mustered four hits on the day and went six-up, six-down against reliever Kurt Yacko over the final two frames.

Rancho (23-27) and Modesto will hook up again on Monday, in a special Memorial Day Game, with first pitch slated for 2:05pm. Brandon Martinez (0-1) will throw for the Quakes, while Modesto starts Juan Gonzalez (2-5). Tickets are available by calling 909-481-5000 or online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
