Modesto Nuts News Release

MODESTO, CA (May 16th, 2013) -- The Nuts picked up their second straight win over the Storm to open a four-game series, defeating Lake Elsinore 6-5 on Thursday night at John Thurman Field.

Modesto held a 6-3 lead into the final three innings, but the Storm plated single runs in the seventh and eighth to make things interesting. But Nuts closer Scott Oberg put away the Storm with a quick 1-2-3 ninth to seal the win.

Tyler Gagnon (2-3) picked up the win, going six strong with allowing just three runs (one earned) on four hits.

After giving up a lead-off home run in the top of the first to Corey Spangenberg, Gagnon cruised all the way to the fifth with no damage, retiring as many as 11 batters in a row.

Modesto grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second against Storm starter Trevor Holder (0-1), and never looked back en route to victory. Holder would eventually be tagged for six runs, but only three were earned due to a trio of errors by Lake Elsinore's defense.

After singles by Harold Riggins and Trevor Story started the second, Juan Crousset got the Nuts on the board with a sac-fly. A throwing-error by Duanel Jones then put the Nuts in front allowing Story to come around from second with two outs in the inning.

Story brought home Tyler Massey in the third on a two-out RBI single, and Crousset doubled and scored on a two-out single by Brian Humphries in the fourth to make it 4-1.

Lake Elsinore cut their deficit back down to one in the top of the fifth as they plated two unearned runs against Gagnon. A dropped fly ball by Crousset early in the inning contributed heavily towards both runs coming across.

Modesto quickly answered with two in the bottom of the fifth as they were able to chase Holder from the game. An RBI double by Story and another two-out RBI single by Crousset put the Nuts in front 6-3.

The Storm bullpen did their job to keep it close, limiting Modesto to just one baserunner the rest of the way. Lake Elsinore tacked on single runs in the seventh and eighth against Nuts reliever Ken Roberts, only one of which was earned. After Roberts gave up an RBI double to Jones in the eighth, he stranded the tying run at second to finish the inning.

Oberg's save gives him nine on the season, which pull him into a first-place tie for the league lead.

The Nuts will try to make it three in a row as they go for the series win on Friday night. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. LHP Tyler Anderson (0-1, 3.18), who was scratched from his last start, returns to the hill for Modesto tomorrow against RHP Matt Jackson (1-1, 5.92).
