Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - Garrett Gould was sterling for the Quakes on Friday night, striking out eight in six scoreless innings, but it was all for naught as Rancho fell to the visiting San Jose Giants, 5-3, in front of a sellout crowd at LoanMart Field.
With a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth inning, the Quakes saw their advantage vanish in the blink of an eye and a swing of the bat. Ryan Cavan sent Eric Eadington's 1-1 offering into the trees beyond the fence in left field for a go-ahead grand slam.
Eadington (L, 0-1) allowed four runs (three earned) and was tagged with his first blown save and first loss of the season. San Jose right-hander Austin Fleet (W, 3-1) picked up the win in 1 1/3 innings of relief.
Trailing 5-2, the Quakes added a run in the bottom half of the frame on a Noel Cuevas RBI infield single to cut the deficit to two, but that was all they could muster up.
Rancho took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on back-to-back home runs from Jonathan Garcia and Ryan Mount. Garcia tied Mount for the team lead with a mammoth shot over the left field wall for his sixth of the season, but Mount retained sole possession two pitches later with a homer to right.
The loss drops the Quakes below the .500 mark in the standings at 20-21 on the season, and they will have a chance to avoid the series sweep on Saturday night. Lindsey Caughel (0-1, 5.40 ERA) gets the call for Rancho, while right-hander Clayton Blackburn (2-1, 3.65 ERA) takes the mound for San Jose.
