Modesto Nuts News Release
Visalia The Modesto Nuts scored five early runs, sending nine batters to the plate in the first inning against Visalia starter Jonathan Barrett, and hung on to beat the Visalia Oaks Sunday afternoon, 9-8. Josh Newman got the win with three innings of relief after Modesto starter Alberto Arias pitched the first three innings without allowing a run. Manual Corpas put out a fire in the eighth inning getting three outs with the tying run at second base, then got out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning to collect his second save of the season.
Joe Gaetti had three hits for Modesto and extended his consecutive on-base streak to 52 games. Ian Stewart had a pair of hits including his 17th home run of the season. Troy Tulowitzki had two hits, as did Simon Ferrer, whose RBI double in the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner.
Modesto was clinging to the lead all day. After Arias threw three shutout innings, Eudy Morel gave up a two-run home run to Josh Arhart in the fourth inning, and then loaded the bases in the fifth. Josh Newman gave up a two-run single to Joey Gomes and then walked Arhart to re-load the bases. But he struck out the dangerous Aneudi Cuevas to leave the bases full. Newman was charged with one run in the sixth inning when a run scored on his wild pitch.
After Scott Beerer allowed two runs in the eighth inning, Corpas came in to the game for a two inning save. He retired three batters, two on strikes, with Sandy Arecena on second base following his two-run double that brought Visalia to within one run. In the ninth inning Corpas loaded the bases, then got Arecena to ground out with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning to preserve the win.
The regular season concludes Monday afternoon as Larry Robles goes to the mound for Modesto. He will be opposed by the Oaks¡¦ Jeremy Flanagan. Game time at Recreation Park is 1:35 p.m.
Modesto will host the Stockton Ports in the first game of the Northern Division playoff series on Wednesday night at John Thurman Field. Mark Kaiser is scheduled to pitch the opener for Modesto against the Ports¡¦ Brad Knox.
