Hoover, AL - Daryle Ward went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored as the Mobile BayBears (86-54, 1-1) mashed the Birmingham Barons (72-69, 1-0), 7-5, in Game Two of the Southern League's Southern Divisional Series in front of 2,017 fans Friday night at Regions Park.
Mobile took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when A.J. Pollock drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on a Daryle Ward single to left field and reached third base on a groundout. Marc Krauss lined a RBI single that plated Pollock for the game's first run.
The Barons knotted the game at 1-1 behind Jake Oester's second home run of the post-season, a leadoff solo blast in the bottom of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth inning the BayBears erupted for five runs behind a key two-run single by Ward and a RBI double by Ryan Wheeler that gave Mobile a five-run edge, 6-1.
A leadoff walk to Jacob Elmore in the top of the fifth inning led to the BayBears' seventh run of the game after Ollie Linton singled that forced Elmore to third base. Adam Eaton lifted a sacrifice fly to left field that plated Elmore as Mobile's lead extended to six, 7-1.
Josh Phegley smashed a leadoff double to right-center field in the bottom of the fifth frame set up Jose Martinez, who knocked a single to right field that bumped Phegley to third base. A wild pitch uncorked by BayBears starter, Jarrod Parker, allowed Phegley to score as the Barons' deficit became five, 7-2.
Birmingham added one run in the seventh frame after Martinez drew a two-out walk and raced around the bases on Oester's RBI double to left field as the Barons tallied their fourth run, 7-3.
In the bottom of the ninth Martinez and Oester drew walks to kick start the inning before Alden Carrithers smacked a RBI single to right field that plated Martinez and moved Oester to second base. Following a groundout that advanced the runners into scoring position, Brandon Short lifted a sacrifice fly that drove in Oester for the game's final run, 7-5.
Parker (1-0) earned the victory for the BayBears as the right-hander tossed 6.0 IP with two earned runs on five hits and six strikeouts.
Hector Santiago (0-1) suffered the defeat for the Barons when the southpaw allowed six runs (three earned) on 7 hits, 4 walks and 5 strikeouts.
