
Mobile falls to Carolina in series opener

Mobile, Ala. â The Carolina Mudcats came into Mobile with the best record in the Southern League and showed all in attendance at Hank Aaron Stadium why. The Mudcats scored four runs in the first inning and cruised from there, winning 7-1.
Carolina scored their first run on a Johnny Hunter wild pitch and added their second on a Chris Padgett solo homerun. Josh Wilson drove in Miguel Cabrera with a double to left-center and scored from second base on a Danny Bravo error.
Cabrera tallied another run for the Mudcats in the third inning with his ninth homer of the year. The BayBears trailed 5-0 entering the bottom of the seventh. Todd Donovan hit a two-out, solo homerun, accounting for the only Mobile run. The homer was Donovan's fifth of the season, tying him for the team lead.
Carolina added their final two runs in the top of the eighth off of reliever Alan Webb. Another Bravo error led to the first with the second scoring on a Wilson Valdez sacrifice fly.
Hunter (0-1) took the loss in his first game with the BayBears since he was sent from Triple-A Portland. Hunter allowed five runs (four earned) on five hits, while striking out five in four innings of work.
The BayBears will host Carolina Sunday night for game two of their series at 7:05. RHP Steve Watkins (1-2; 4.50) will start on the mound for Mobile against Mudcats LHP Todd Moser (0-1; 3.60).
