GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. -- Minnesota United will hope to build on past home results against Sporting Kansas City this weekend, as it hosts Peter Vermes' team for the third time in MLS action on Sunday, May 20 at 1:00 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcast on FOX Sports North+, with radio coverage on 1500 ESPN.

FIRST TOUCHES:

MNUFC and Sporting Kansas City have met on six occasions since 2014: three times in the U.S. Open Cup and three times in MLS. Sporting leads the series with a 4-1-1 record.

Sporting played against the Minnesota Thunder in the Open Cup during the Wizards era. The Thunder claimed a shocking 3-1 victory en route to a semifinal appearance in the 2005 tournament. The Wizards got revenge in 2009, winning on penalties after an eventful extra time.

MNUFC and Sporting played each other four times across competitions last year, three times in MLS and once in Open Cup play. It's the only team the Loons will play three times during the MLS regular-season campaign.

MNUFC captain Francisco Calvo was named to the Costa Rica national team's 23-man roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia this week. "I'm very happy and very grateful to god, first of all," said Calvo. "I think this is what you work for, right? To be in that list. It's been a long four years in the buildup to this great opportunity to participate in the World Cup and now I have to keep working hard."

Concacaf announced that Allianz Field has been selected as a host venue for the 2018 Concacaf Gold Cup next July. Allianz Field is one of 15 venues in 13 major cities across the United States to be selected to host matches in the 2019 edition of the tournament.
