Milwaukee Wave News Release
DEFEAT ST. LOUIS AMBUSH IN OVERTIME! at UW-Milwaukee Panther Arena Saturday night.
The Milwaukee Wave (6-0) squeaked out a win Friday night at The Family Arena in St. Louis against the Ambush. Final score, MKE Wave 4, St. Louis Ambush 3, in overtime.
"This was definitely not one of our most intelligent games played," said Head Coach Giuliano Oliviero. "I thought our focus wasn't our best tonight, our physicality lacked too but again the sign of a good team is to find a way to win and that's what we did tonight."
The St. Louis Ambush started the scoring at the 4:41 mark of the first quarter with a goal from Nestor Hernandez (Hewerton Moreira). MKE Wave Goalkeeper Josh Lemos (unassisted) answered back with a goal of his own at the 3:56 mark of the second quarter and eventually the Ambush would score again to take the lead into the half.
It wasn't until the third quarter, when MKE Wave Forward #99 Andre Hayne scored a goal on a monster bicycle kick from about 10 feet out, that the Wave got their mojo back.
"When Andre hit that bicycle kick, and I highly doubt that anyone with come close to that this year for goal of the year," said Oliviero. "With the power and the strength that he did it with, it really lifted the spirits of the whole team and we rallied around it and stepped up our game from that point on. That was a big turning point in the game for us."
The back and fourth would continue until a late 4th quarter goal from St. Louis Ambush sixth attacker Clayton Matheus (Corey Adamson) with 1:14 left, sent the game into overtime.
In overtime, MKE Wave Forward, #9 Robert Renaud found the back of the net at the 4:23 mark for the game winner.
Final score, Milwaukee Wave 4, St. Louis Ambush 3, in overtime.
"We are going to be more mentally prepared tomorrow for the Tacoma Stars," said Oliviero. "We know they are a good, young team that can physically get up and down the field but we're going to need our fans and the energy they produce in the stands and really look to put a complete game from start to finish on Saturday."
