MISSOULA, MONT. - Utilizing strong pitching performances, the Missoula Osprey (14-9) swept a doubleheader over Idaho Falls (7-18) on Sunday from Ogren Park Allegiance Field. The two victories, 3-2 and 4-1, respectively, handed Missoula sole possession of first place in the Pioneer League North standings.
Scott Schultz took the ball in game one for Missoula, tossing the first 5.0 innings and allowing just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts to move to 1-1 on the year. Gabriel Moya tossed a scoreless sixth inning before Dan Savas entered and retired the side in order in the ninth to convert his eighth save of the year.
Cameron Smith made his first professional start in game two, and the lefty certainly came prepared. Smith struck out a career-high tying eight batters and allowed two hits over 5.0 innings to improve to 4-0 on the season and lower his ERA to 0.96. Aaron Sookee threw a scoreless sixth inning, including registering a strikeout, before Cody Clark finished the game on the hill for Missoula.
Shortstop Isan Diaz provided the offense in both games, going 1-for-3 with a two-RBI double in game one before lacing his second homer of the year to leadoff the bottom of the first in game two. Diaz added a triple in the second game, ultimately finishing 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap.
Luke Lowery turned in a 2-for-3 night with a run scored and a double in the first game of the day, while Joey Armstrong went 2-for-2 with a run scored in the second game. Like Diaz, Marcus Wilson made a strong impact in both victories, registering a hit and an RBI in each. Although his eight-game hit streak came to an end in the game one, Austin Byler contributed a triple and a run scored in the second game to get right back on track.
Missoula will conclude the four-game series with Idaho Falls, and a seven-game home stand, tomorrow night. First pitch between RHP Yefrey Ramirez (2-0, 2.86 ERA) and RHP Carter Hope (0-0, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled for 7:05 pm MT.
