Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Missions catcher Rocky Gale tagged out Max Stassi at home plate to end the game and preserve a 4-3 San Antonio win over the Hooks Monday night at Wolff Stadium in front of 3,455.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning Stassi doubled against Missions relief pitcher Jeremy McBryde, his fourth hit of the night. Domingo Santana then hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield that glanced off of first baseman Johan Limonta and trickled into right field. Stassi took a wide turn at third and tried to score, but second baseman Cory Spangenberg picked up the ball and threw a strike to home plate where Gale applied the game-ending tag.
Corpus Christi (22-16, 64-44) jumped out to an early lead on Stassi's third-inning, two-run home run against starting pitcher Juan Oramas. It was the Yuba City native's ninth home run in his last 13 games and put the Hooks in front 2-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning Jeudy Valdez and Spangenberg hit back-to-back doubles off Hooks starter Bobby Doran to cut the Corpus Christi lead in half.
The Hooks got the run back in the fifth. With one out, Oramas surrendered three straight singles, induced Santana to pop out, but then walked Jonathan Meyer to force in a run and give Corpus Christi a 3-1 lead. Oramas' night ended after he allowed three earned runs on nine hits in four and two-thirds innings. Tim Sexton (1-2) replaced Oramas on the mound and struck out Zach Johnson to end the frame.
Having thrown 86 pitches, Doran returned to the mound for the sixth inning. He allowed a one-out single to Gale and Valdez followed with his eighth home run of the season to tie the game at three.
Sergio Escalona (1-2) started the seventh on the mound for Corpus Christi and surrendered a run without allowing a hit. He hit Reymond Fuentes, who moved around the bases on a wild pitch and a balk, before Yeison Asencio hit into a fielder's choice that gave the Missions a 4-3 lead.
Corpus Christi had a chance to tie the game in the eighth, with runners at second and third and one out, but Enrique Hernandez and Ronny Torreyes could not push the tying run home.
San Antonio (23-15, 65-43) moved a game in front of the Hooks in the Texas League South second half race and snapped Corpus Christi's six game winning streak.
The second game of the three-game set is Tuesday night when the Hooks send Mike Foltynewicz (5-1, 2.49) to the mound against San Antonio's Keyvius Sampson (8-4, 2.49).
