Missions Hold on in Another Late-Tight

CORPUS CHRISTI - San Antonio struck for three seventh-inning runs to take a 6-5 decision over Corpus Christi Sunday at Whataburger Field before 5,658.

Both clubs stand 31-31 in Texas League first-half play, 5=C21/2 games behind South Division leader Frisco with eight remaining.

The decisive surge made a winner of John Hussey (2-3), the second of five Missions hurlers. Corpus Christi held a 5-1 advantage through five, but starter Tommy Shirley and reliever Richard Rodriguez (0-1) faltered.

The Hooks, who left 11, had traffic on the bases early but nothing to show for it vs. Juan Oramas. He pitched around Nolan Fontana's one-out walk and a Jonathan Meyer two-out single during the first and was backed by an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play after Carlos Perdomo's second-inning lead-off safety.

San Antonio capitalized on a two-out opportunity while grabbing a 1-0 lead two frames later. Rymer Liriano reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and crossed when Jason Hagerty singled a 3-2 Shirley fastball into right field. Shirley began the evening by retiring the first 10 Missions.

Oramas flirted with danger again in the fourth, hitting Andrew Aplin on the shoulder and walking Meyer. The left-hander recovered nicely, striking out Preston Tucker, Perdomo and Rene Garcia in order.

Oramas' fortunes changed dramatically as Corpus Christi batted around for five unearned fifth-inning runs. The wheels began to fall off when right fielder Yeison Asencio dropped Jio Mier's sinking liner. Tucker's two-out double to the left-field wall pushed two runs home; Ruben Sosa and Perdomo produced RBI singles, Meyer a sacrifice fly.

Though Oramas' ERA was not adversely affected, he issued two walks and was victimized for three stolen bases, two by Sosa. Oramas, who came within an out of escaping the fifth, allowed five hits, four walks and struck out five.

Shirley failed to provide a shut-down, coughing up two runs as the Missions pulled to within 5-3. Brian Bixler, Adam Buschini and Asencio singled consecutively to load the bases and Shirley plunked Liriano. Buschini scored on a 4-6-3 double-play ball off Hagerty's bat.

Cody Oberbeck's first home run - a lead-off blast into the Hooks bullpen - made it 5-4 Hooks and finished Shirley, who permitted six hits and struck out six over six-plus. Rodriguez got Lee Orr and Bridger Hunt on consecutive ground balls, but back-to-back doubles from Bixler and Buschini tied the contest before Asencio's single put San Antonio ahead to stay.

Corpus Christi threatened again in the seventh, loading the bases with one away. Leonel Campos cleaned up Jeff Ibarra's conundrum, inducing a 6-4-3 twin killing from Garcia.

The same scenario presented itself during the home eighth, Johnny Barbato on the mound. With Mier (double/stolen base) at third, Sosa (single/stolen base) at second and Fontana (walk) at first, Andrew Aplin flew to Liriano in center. His throw to Hagerty at the plate arrived with Mier, who was called out on a close play. Hooks manager Keith Bodie was ejected while arguing the Missions catcher failed to give Mier a path to the plate before receiving the ball.

Barbato picked up his 16th save.

The teams square off again Monday at 7:10, Corpus Christi's Brady Rodgers (1-7) vs. Jesse Hahn (2-1). Mrs Baird's presents $ Hot Dogs & Soda.
