Springfield Cardinals News Release
Springfield, MO - The Tulsa Drillers edged the Springfield Cardinals, 3-1, before 4,402 fans at Hammons Field on Sunday evening.
After a 35-minute rain delay before the First Pitch, the Cardinals (28-34) came out swinging, cracking the scoreless tie against LHP Tyler Anderson in the bottom of the first inning. 3B Jacob Wilson started the early rally with a one-out walk, darting to second base on a single by C Cody Stanley. After a walk from 1B Jonathan Rodriguez loaded the bases, LF Chris Swauger ripped an RBI single to score Wilson for the 1-0 advantage.
LHP Marco Gonzales (1-2) kept the lead intact through his first two scoreless frames, but Tulsa evened it in the top of the third. With two away, SS Taylor Featherston knocked a solo home run to sqaure the score, 1-1.
Gonzales posted a scoreless fourth and then struck out the side in the fifth, but the Drillers (35-26) moved in front in the top of the sixth. Gonzales gave way to LHP Ryan Sherriff with runners at the corners and one down. With 3B Jayson Langfels at the plate, Sherriff attempted a pickoff of RF Tyler Massey with a throw to first base. However, the throw bounced away from first and enabled the runner from third, LF Brian Humphries, to score for the 2-1 lead.
The Drillers then padded the lead in the top of the ninth with one more tally. With INF Joey Wong at second base and two down, C Ryan Casteel struck with an RBI single, bringing in Wong to stretch the lead to two runs. RHP Scott Oberg (S, 15) then took over for the bottom of the ninth, closing the 3-1 win for Tulsa with a scoreless frame.
