Missions Drop 1st Game in Corpus

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Missions received a much-needed quality start but it wasn't enough to prevent the club's sixth straight loss and fourth shutout of the year Saturday night at Whataburger Field.

Bryan Rodriguez allowed only three hits over seven innings. One of those hits was a two-run homer by the Astros Evan Gattis. Gattis was optioned to Corpus Christi to receive more reps at catcher. Houston's two primary backstops, Jason Castro and Erik Kratz, have hit a combined .170.

San Antonio out-hit the Hooks, 5-3. It was only the ninth time in 29 games that the club outhit the opposition. It was the sixth time in 12 games that Corpus was held to three hits or fewer.

The Missions have been blanked for 14 straight innings and have scored only 11 runs in the last five games. During that stretch, they've collected 26 hits while striking out 51 times.

San Antonio dropped to 9-20, becoming the fifth team in minor league baseball with at least 20 losses so far.

NOTES: This is the worst 29-game start for a Missions club since the 2002 team also started 9-20. That team won its next game....The Missions entered the night with the minors second highest ERA (5.49) while the Hooks started the night with the third worst batting average in minor league baseball (.205)
