Missions Denied Sweep in Extra-Inning Loss to 'Hounds
May 4, 2015 - Texas League (TL1)
San Antonio Missions News Release
San Antonio's hopes of a four-game sweep of Midland were dashed in a frustrating, 4-3 loss in 11 innings Monday afternoon at Wolff Stadium.
The Missions wasted little time getting on the board Monday, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second on RockHounds' starter Jake Sanchez with a Luis Domoromo sacrifice fly to center.
Two innings later, San Antonio added two more courtesy of a Sanchez balk and a Diego Goris RBI single to take a 3-0 lead.
Elliot Morris had no trouble continuing the dominant run Mission pitching had been on, keeping the 'Hounds off the board in each of his first five innings.
However, the right-hander ran into trouble in the top of the sixth when Midland loaded the bases with two outs. Morris would then induce what appeared to be an inning-ending fly out to left off the bat of Ryon Healy. Unfortunately, for Morris, left fielder Yeison Asencio dropped the ball, allowing all three runners to score, tying the game at three. The three runs also ended San Antonio pitching's scoreless inning streak at 23.2 (tying last season's longest streak).
Asencio would later atone for his fielding mistake with a sensational throw in the top of the ninth, gunning down Jaycob Brugman at the plate trying to tag from third to keep the game tied at three.
In the top of the 11th, Midland finally took its first lead of the game when Brugman followed a Healy one-out double with a triple into right center off reliever Dennis O'Grady (0-1).
Ryan Doolittle (1-0) closed out the game in the bottom of the 11th, snapping the club's four-game losing streak. The right-hander did not allow a hit and walked just one in two scoreless innings of relief.
The Missions finished just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 12 men on base in the loss, which snapped their season-best four-game win streak.
San Antonio (10-14) begins a four-game series against Frisco (11-12, playing at 7:05 PM Mon.) Tuesday night at Dr Pepper Ballpark, with first pitch slated for 7:05 PM. Right-hander Zack Segovia (1-0, 0.00) will get the ball for the Missions, while the 'Riders counter with lefty Chad Bell (1-2, 3.32).
Notes: CF Travis Jankowski finished the game 2-for-5 with a run scored and a walk to extend his TL-best on-base streak to 21 games.
