Missiaen and Whale Hand Penguins Shutout Loss
January 6, 2013 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release
HARTFORD, Conn. - In the final match of their three-game, three-day weekend, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins were blanked by the Connecticut Whale, 2-0, at XL Center.
Holding the Worcester Sharks scoreless at home the night prior, the Penguins suffered the same fate on Sunday afternoon thanks to a two-goal effort by the Whale's Kyle Jean and 35 saves from rookie goaltender Jason Missiaen.
Connecticut took a 1-0 lead in the opening period on the game's first power play. After a failed clearing attempt by the Penguins, Jean threw a shot through a screen that found space above the shoulder of goalie Brad Thiessen at 12:24.
Jean struck again midway through the second and made it a two-goal edge for the Whale. A miscue by the Penguins behind their own net led to a point-blank chance for Shayne Wiebe. Thiessen was able to get a piece of Wiebe's shot, but Jean followed up the rebound for the easy put-back.
The two markers were more than enough for Missiaen, who was stellar in net in registering his first AHL shutout.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton limited Connecticut to just 18 shots as Thiessen finished the game with 16 saves.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins open up a three-game home stand with a match against the Binghamton Senators on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 7:05PM. Individual seats for all Penguins home games are available at the Mohegan Sun Arena box office, online at www.ticketmaster.com, and by calling 800-745-3000.
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton season ticket packages, including 12-game and Flexbook plans, are available by contacting the Penguins directly at 570-208-7367.
