Aeros Fall to Stars 4-3 in Overtime

Cedar Park, TX - The Houston Aeros (18-11-3-3, 42 points) were defeated by the Texas Stars (19-11-3-2, 43 points) 4-3 in overtime on Sunday in front of 3,956 fans at Cedar Park Center. Texas forward Cody Eakin scored a power-play goal 1:45 into overtime, pushing the Stars past Texas. Houston forwards Nick Petersen and Zack Phillips each had a goal and an assist, as Houston dropped to 0-2-2-2 over the last six road games. Texas goalie Christopher Nilstorp (14-10-0) stopped 24 of 27 Houston shots for the victory. Houston goalie Matt Hackett (13-11-3) finished with 25 saves on the evening, suffering the overtime loss. Houston will return to visit rival Texas again at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Cedar Park Center.

The Aeros tallied the only goal of the opening period, striking for a power-play tally just 3:27 into the contest. Forward Nick Petersen found a rebound in the Stars crease and shuffled it past goalie Christopher Nilstorp. Defenseman Tyler Cuma and center Zack Phillips each had an assist on Petersen's third goal of the season for the 1-0 Houston lead.

The game opened up in the second period, starting with a shorthanded goal by Texas forward Reilly Smith at 4:37, tying the game 1-1. Houston moved back in front with its second power-play goal of the game at 5:33. Zack Phillips finished off a centering pass from Petersen, scoring his second goal of the season with a wrist shot past Nilstorp. Defenseman Tyler Cuma added an assist as the Aeros claimed a 2-1 lead. Texas countered quickly at 5:54 of the period, scoring just 21 seconds after Houston took the lead. Forward Mike Hedden scooped up a rebound and shuffled it past Matt Hackett for the 2-2 score. Hedden's first goal of the season was set up by Jamie Oleksiak and Antoine Roussel. The Stars took a 3-2 lead at 9:29 of the second period with a power-play goal by Maxime Fortunus. Forward Scott Glennie and defenseman Gord Baldwin each had an assist on Fortunus' third goal of the season.

Houston tied the game 3-3 at 11:55 of the third period, knotting the game off Johan Larsson's power-play goal. Larsson scored his ninth goal of the season off a rebound of a Charlie Coyle shot. Jason Zucker added an assist on the club's third power-play goal of the season, forcing overtime.

In the extra session, the Stars were granted a power-play goal just 1:25 into overtime, with David McIntyre picking up a tripping penalty. Texas took advantage, with Cody Eakin sneaking the puck over the shoulder of Hackett for the game-winning tally at 1:45 of OT. Brenden Dillon and Reilly Smith each had an assist, as Texas claimed a 4-3 overtime victory.

The Aeros will play at Texas on Friday, a 7:30 p.m. at the Cedar Park Center. Houston will return home on Saturday, Jan. 12 and Sunday, Jan 13. The Aeros host the Lake Erie Monsters at 7:05 p.m. on Jan. 12 and the Charlotte Checkers at 5:05 p.m. on Jan. 13. The Aeros will host a book drive, which begins on Saturday, Jan. 12 and concludes after the game on Sunday, Jan. 13. For every book that is donated, the Aeros will reward the donor with two tickets to a select home game (limit - five books per person). Fans may donate their books on the concourse by section 107. All the donated books will be collected and delivered to the Texas Children's Hospital, assisting the "It's My Heart" program.
