Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 16, 2013) - With each passing day, the Fort Myers Miracle continue to re-write their record book.
The Miracle came from behind to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals 7-4 on Tuesday to secure a 12-0 start to the season. The 12 game winning streak ties for the longest in team history. The 1995 and 2007 teams also won 12 straight.
The Miracle remain the only team in Minor League Baseball without a defeat.
Minnesota Twins top prospect Miguel Sano was the key cog in the victory. With the Miracle trailing 3-2 in the seventh, Sano hit a titanic grand slam over the left field wall to put Fort Myers ahead for good, 7-4.
That was enough for Cole Johnson, who recorded the last six outs in order for the save.
The Miracle will now turn their attention to win No. 13. They will go for the 13-0 mark on Wednesday against the Cardinals at 7:05 p.m. The team already set the record for the best start to a season in team history when it went to 10-0 on Sunday.
On Tuesday, the Miracle got another solid start from Jason Wheeler, who scattered five hits and gave up three runs in five innings. Wheeler struggled with his command, walking four, but he induced three double plays to avoid further trouble.
In a rehab assignment for the Twins, Tim Wood gave up three hits and one run in one inning of work. He was the recipient of the win thanks to Sano's fourth home run of the season.
The Miracle scored the first run of the ballgame on a double play ball in In the second when Kennys Vargas grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that allowed Matt Koch to score.
The Cardinals took the lead in the third when Colin Walsh laced a two-out, two-run single to right.
Eddie Rosario helped tie the game in the bottom of the third when he grounded into a 4-6-3 double play that plated AJ Pettersen.
Palm Beach took a brief 3-2 lead in the sixth when Wood fielded a ball hit by James Ramsey down the first base line. Instead of waiting to see if the ball would go foul, Wood pick it up and was unable to get Ramsey at first. Tyler Rahmutallah scored on the play.
The Cardinals' lead was erased in the bottom of the inning with Brandon Creath on the mound. With one out, Pettersen drew a walk and Angel Morales reached on an error. Rosario hit a single sharply to center to load the bases. Sano wasted no time, launching Creath's first offering high over the wall in left for his first grand slam in a Miracle uniform.
