CLEARWATER: The Clearwater Threshers got stomped 8-1 by the Daytona Cubs Monday night in front of a home crowd of 1,311 at Bright House Field.

The Threshers (5-6) fell behind early and didn't crack the scoreboard until the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Daytona (6-5) to race out to an insurmountable lead. The loss is the third in as many home games for Clearwater at Bright House Field in 2013.

Daytona opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. John Andreoliand Stephen Bruno began the frame with back-to-back singles off Threshers starter Hoby Milner (0-1). Andreoli scored on an RBI single from Dustin Geiger; Bruno was thrown out at third attempting to advance, and Geiger moved up to second on the throw. Ben Carhart hit a double to right, but Geiger only made it to third after a strong defensive effort by right Cameron Perkins held him longer at second base. With two outs, David Botedoubled home both runners, and was then singled home by Zeke DeVoss to make it 4-0 Cubs in the second.

The Cubs padded their lead in the fourth, as Carhart and Bote singled against reliever Mike Nesseth to put runners on first and second with two outs. DeVoss lined a shot to left that evaded the dive of left fielder Carlos Alonso, and the runners scampered home on the two-run triple to make it 6-0 in favor of Daytona.

The Cubs tacked on a couple more runs in the top of the eighth against Colton Murray. Andreoli singled with one out, and Bruno doubled him to third base. Geiger brought home Andreoli on a groundout to shortstop Jose Mojica, and Carhart drilled a single up the middle to plate Bruno and give Daytona an 8-0 lead.

Clearwater finally struck back in the bottom of the ninth. Alonso led off the inning with a single to left off reliever Sheldon McDonald, and advanced to second on a groundout to first from third baseman Maikel Franco. First baseman Chris Serritellahit a sharp grounder to the right side that sliced away from Bruno for a single, putting runners on the corners. Perkins laced a single over the middle that scored Alonso and put the Threshers on the board with the final 8-1 score, as center fielder Aaron Altherr and designated hitter Harold Martinez both went down quietly for the final outs.

Milner took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk in 1.2 innings; he fanned two. Nesseth gave up a pair of runs on three hits in 3.1 frames of relief. Ryan O'Sullivan pitched two perfect innings of relief, striking out one. Murray gave up two runs on four hits and a walk in his lone relief inning.
