FORT MYERS, FL (April 19, 2006) - The Fort Myers Miracle showed a little perseverance and a lot of heart on Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium coming from behind to defeat the Tampa Yankees 4-3.
With the Miracle trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth Deacon Burns clubbed a 2-1 pitch over the right field wall, for his first homer of the season, to tie the game at three.
With one out in the eighth Alexi Casilla reached on an infield single. Trevor Plouffe singled him to second. Garrett Guzman loaded the bases when he hit a shot to short, that Eduardo Nunez bobbled. Burns then followed with a walk to push across the eventual winning run.
Miracle closer J.P. Martinez made things interesting in the ninth, but eventually picked up his second save of the season. With one out he walked the number nine hitter P.J. Pilitter, but got Brett Gardner on strikes. Hector Made singled to right to put runners at first and second, but Martinez struck out Hector Vechionacci to end the game.
With the Miracle trailing 1-0 in the second Jeremy Pickrel tripled and scored on Kyle Geiger's ground out. The Miracle took a 2-1 lead in the fifth on an RBI double from Justin Arneson.
The Yankees took their last lead of the night in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Edwar Gonzalez and then an RBI fielder's choice by Tim Battle.
The Miracle pitching was solid again. Starter Kevin Slowey went 5.1 innings allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out seven. Tim Lahey picked up the win in relief going 2.2 hitless innings.
The Miracle now embark on a nine game road trip beginning Thursday night in Lakeland against the Tigers at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Kyle Aselton (0-1, 2.79) to the hill.
