Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Vero Beach) - Xavier Paul scored three times Wednesday night as the Vero Beach Dodgers knocked off the Jupiter Hammerheads 5-2 at Holman Stadium. Blake Johnson (1-0)went six innings for the win and Kyle Wilson pitched the ninth for the first save by any Vero Beach pitcher this season. The Dodgers homestand continues with the Daytona Cubs coming to town for Thirsty Thursday at 7:00 PM.

By taking two of three games from the Hammerheads, the Dodgers won series for the first time in four tries in 2006. It looked bleak early as Jupiter picked up an early run thanks to two walks and a two-out single from Brett Carroll.

The Dodgers immediately answered against Marlins 1st Round Draft Pick Jacob Marceaux. David Nicholson led off with a single and stole second. After advancing on an error, Ryan Carter's sacrifice fly tied the score.

In the second, Xavier Paul led off with a walk and he, too, stole second base. Pat Borders followed with a single to right that scored Paul and put the Dodgers ahead 2-1.

Jamie Hoffman doubled with two outs in the fourth and scored on a single by Blake DeWitt to make it 3-1. The Dodgers lead swelled to three runs the next inning when Jimmy Rohan drew a bases-loaded walk that followed two errors and a hit batter.

Jupiter's only other run came in Johnson's final inning during the 6th. Edgar Gonzalez led off with a solid single. After a popout, Grant Psomas reached on an error. Carroll then grounded into a fielder's choice but Steven Gendron singled in Gonzalez to the pull the Hammerheads within 4-2.

But while Wilson and reliever Adam Thomas kept Jupiter off the scoreboard the rest of the way, the Dodgers had one more trick up their sleeves. Paul led off the 7th with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. A deep fly ball from Borders allowed Paul to advance to third base. Then Jason Mooneyham perfectly executed a suicide squeeze bunt to plate Paul and give the Dodgers their 5-2 lead.
