Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - In front of a standing room only crowd of 7,946 the Fort Myers Miracle used their bats to run their record to 3-0 with an 11-7 victory over the Sarasota Reds on Saturday night at Hammond Stadium
The Miracle looked like they were going to cruise jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Alexi Casilla led off the inning with an infield single. He moved to third on Garrett Guzman's single to right and Guzman advanced to second on a throwing error by the right fielder. Casilla scored and Guzman went to third on a wild pitch. With the bases loaded and one out Erold Andrus singled home a run to make it 2-0. With the bases loaded Brock Peterson hit a grounder to first, but the force out at the place was dropped by the catcher John Purdom and it allowed two runs to score. The final run of the inning scored on a fielders choice off the bat of Kory Feiner.
Miracle starter Kevin Slowey was perfect in every sense of the word. Through five innings he faced 15 batters and retired all 15, while striking out eight including the side in the fifth. He ran into a little trouble in the sixth. The perfect game ended in the sixth, when Cody Straight's grounder to short was thrown into the stands by Trevor Plouffe. The no-hitter ended one batter later when Habelito Hernandez singled home Straight. The Reds tacked on three more in the inning to chase Slowey, but he went 5.2 innings allowing four unearned runs on two hits while walking one and striking out eight.
The Miracle took a 6-4 lead in the sixth when with runners at the corners and one out Andrus hit a grounder to short that was booted by Adam Rosales and it allowed Guzman to score.
The Reds knotted the game at six, however, in the seventh. Back-to-back RBI singles by Brandon Roberts and Phillip Gentry off of Ryan Callahan erased the Miracle lead. Both runs were charged to Josh Hill who went an inning and allowed two runs on two hits.
The Miracle didn't wait long regaining the lead. They sent 12 men to the plate in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, four straight singles by Casilla, Plouffe, Guzman and Winfree led to a run. With runners at second and third and two outs the Reds elected to intentionally walk Deacon Burns to load the bases. Andrus hit a hanging breaking ball over the right field wall for a grand slam and put the game out of reach. He finished the night 2-4 with a grand slam, six RBI and two runs scored.
The same two teams meet Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Kyle Aselton (NR) to the hill against Reds LHP Camilo Vazquez (NR).
