Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Port St. Lucie, FL) - The St. Lucie Mets continued their trend by scoring a late run to earn a one-run victory over the Vero Beach Dodgers in a 3-2 thriller at Tradition Field Saturday night. Jonathan Malo homered for the Mets and Carlos Muniz saved his second game in three days. The series concludes Sunday at 5:00 PM at Holman Stadium for the first Sunday Fun Day of the year. The Dodgers did take their first lead of the season and took it early in the game. Jamie Hoffman led off the contest with a double down the third base line and advanced to third on Xavier Paul's sacrifice. Blake DeWitt then grounded out to bring home Hoffman and put the Dodgers ahead 1-0. Vero starter Julio Pimentel would keep that lead until his next-to-last batter. Through 4 2/3 he allowed just three baserunners and set down eight in a row at one point. But Jonathan Malo lifted a home run down the left field line to tie the score. St. Lucie took the lead in the 7th when Jesus Flores doubled with one out. After reliever Adam Thomas struck out the next batter, Ryan Coultas reached on an infield hit and a bad throw allowed Flores to put the Mets ahead 2-1. Jamar Hill singled in another run in the 8th to give St. Lucie a two-run cushion. Closer Carlos Muniz, who pitched a perfect 9th for the save on Thursday, started Saturday with a strikeout. Travis Denker reached on an error and Cole Bruce followed with a single. After a popout, DH Chris Westervelt singled in Denker but Ryan Russ hit into a force play to end the game.
