Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

VIERA, FL (July 18, 2005) - The pitchers at Double-A and Triple-A should be put on notice, there is a lot of talent right below as another 19-year-old turned in a sterling performance for the Fort Myers Miracle as Jay Rainville earned his first victory in the FSL in a 3-2 victory over the Brevard County Manatees on Monday night at Space Coast Stadium.

Rainville, making his Miracle debut, joined Anthony Swarzak in tossing a quality start in his first game in the FSL. Rainville went six strong innings allowing one run on six hits while striking out five and picking up his first victory. He hasn't lost a game since May 10, while with Beloit, and has won seven straight decisions. He didn't allow a hit until a one out infield single in the fourth inning. With two outs he gave up a single to Steve Moss that put runners at the corners, but got Lou Palmisano to line out to short to end the inning.

The only run Rainville allowed was in the sixth. He gave up back-to-back singles to Drew Anderson and Adam Heether, to put runners at the corners. Moss then hit a grounder to third, which forced Heether at second and allowed Anderson to score. Rainville then struck out the final two hitters he faced.

The Miracle got all their runs in the first inning. Manatee starter Ben Diggins walked three of the first five hitters to load the bases. That allowed Brock Peterson to bat with the bases loaded. He ripped a bases clearing double, just inside the left field line, and extended his hitting streak to a Miracle season high 14 games. Peterson finished the night 2-4 with a double, three RBI and a walk.

Jannio Gutierrez tossed the final three innings and cruised through the first 2.2. With two outs in the ninth he gave up singles to Wandel Campana and Robbie Deevers that put runners at the corners. He then balked in Campana and sent the tying run to second. Steve Sollman then ripped a shot back to the mound that glanced off Gutierrez' glove and went to second baseman Angelo Fermin who threw to first to end the game. Gutierrez went three innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out six to earn his fifth save of the season.

The Miracle have Tuesday off and return to action Wednesday for a four game home and home series with the Sarasota Reds that begins at Ed Smith Stadium at 7:00 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Justin Jones (2-1, 4.35) to the mound.
