Daytona Tortugas News Release
SARASOTA, Fla-Anyone who witnessed the second inning of Game 2 between the Sarasota Reds and Daytona Cubs knows all they need to know about what happened at Ed Smith Stadium on Sunday.
In a contest dominated by two pitching staffs, the Reds scored the only three runs of the day in the bottom half of the second inning when second baseman Luis Bolivar lined a bases-loaded three-RBI triple off of Cubs starter Yorkin Ferreras (0-3) to guide Sarasota to the win by a final of 3-0.
Ferreras was solid in his fourth start for Daytona, as the right-hander struck out nine Reds and gave up just four hits in six innings of work. But the Cubs managed just four hits of their own on the afternoon, and the southpaw was charged with his third loss of the season.
Reds starter D.J. Mattox (2-5) gave up two hits in five innings to notch his second victory, and righty reliever Jim Paduch pitched the final four innings while he surrendered just two hits to record his first save of '05.
With the loss the Daytona Cubs dropped to 6-16, as the Reds improved to 10-12 in the second half.
The two teams will meet back at Ed Smith Stadium on Monday for the final two games of the series as part of a pair of seven-inning contests.
First pitch of the twin bill is set for 5:00 p.m. EST.
