Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL - The Fort Myers Miracle won't win many games when one player out hits them as was the case Friday night at Hammond Stadium in a 4-0 loss to the Tampa Yankees.

Yankee left fielder Erold Andrus came into Friday night's game hitting just .234, but went 5-5, with five singles and raised his average by 14 points. He got the Yankees going in the first off of Miracle starter Scott Tyler. The Yankees loaded the bases on a hit batsman, single and a two out walk. Andrus collected his first hit, a two run single to right that gave the Yankees a 2-0 lead.

Tyler wasn't as sharp as he has been in his last five starts, going just 4.2 innings allowing three runs on eight hits while walking three and striking out four. He gave up two more singles to Andrus, in the third and fifth, and was finally removed when he gave up an RBI single to Tommy Rojas with two out in the fifth. Andrus also singled in the seventh and ninth becoming only the seventh player, since 1994, to collect five hits off the Miracle.

The Miracle didn't manage any offense at all collecting just four hits. They got singles from Kyle Phillips (2nd), Matt Moses (4th), Scott Whitrock (6th) and Justin Arneson (8th) and had only two base runners as far as second. Trailing 3-0 in the fifth, Jose Leger reached on a two base error when second baseman Justin Christian dropped a pop up. Whitrock reached on an infield single, but Arneson lined into a double play. In the eighth, trailing by the same score the Miracle had first and second and one out, but Trent Oeltjen flew out to center and JR Taylor grounded out to first.

Brett Smith started for the Yankees going five innings allowing three hits while walking one and striking out three. Josh Smith and T.J. Beam pitched the final four innings to preserve the shutout.

The Miracle welcome the Sarasota Reds into town Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send LHP Justin Jones (0-1, 6.75) to the hill against Reds RHP Jim Paduch (1-5, 4.71).
