July 1, 2005 - Florida State League (FSL1)
Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release
The Vero Beach Dodgers blanked Palm Beach 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader, but fell 6-2 in the second game. Danny Muegge and Mark Alexander combined to shut out the Cardinals and Matt Kemp lined his 14th home run of the season to help the Dodgers take the opening game. In the nightcap, Vero issued seven walks to aid the Cardinals victory. The Dodgers are in St. Lucie Saturday night at 7:00 PM, but return home Sunday for the Independence Day celebration.
The first game cruised by with Danny Muegge tossing five shutout innings and improving his record to 4-2. Mark Alexander then retired all six batters he faced, striking out four. He picked up his 12th save of the year, good for fourth in the league.
Kemp's home run came in the second inning. He led off with line drive down the right field that landed on the grass berm and put the Dodgers ahead 1-0. Justin Ruggiano led off the fourth with a single and eventually scored the second run on sacrifice fly from Cole Bruce.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals scored single runs in the first and second against Alvis Ojeda, who made his first start of the year. He took the loss to drop to 3-1. The Cards added two in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh.
The Dodgers picked up their first run in the fifth inning off starter Roberto Batista. Bruce led off with a walk and later scored on Tony Abreu's only hit of the doubleheader. In the sixth, Anthony Raglani led off with a triple and scored on a base hit from Kemp.
