WEEK IN REVIEW FOR THE CARDINALS
Information provided by Tony Suarez, Media Relations for Palm Beach Cardinals
On Friday, Joe Mather hit a grand slam in the eighth inning with no one out in the second game of a doubleheader to cap what was a night of 20 innings of exciting baseball. In the bottom of the second of game two, Jason Motte hit a three run home run to give the Cardinals the early lead. The Manatees added two runs in the fifth off starter Roberto Batista on a double by first baseman Jeff Eure and then a wild pitch. The scored stayed 3-2 until the top of the seventh. Mark Worrell entered the game and gave up a leadoff double to third baseman Adam Heether and then a single to catcher Lou Palmisano to tie the game at three. In the bottom of the eighth, consecutive singles by Brendan Ryan and Andy Schutzenhofer, followed by an intentional walk to Matt Dryer, loaded the bases for Mather. On a 3-2 pitch, Mather hit a blast deep to make the Cards a 7-3 winner. Worrell picked up the win, while the loss went to Bo Hall.
The first game of the doubleheader was a classic pitchers' duel between Carlos Villanueva for the Manatees and Jose Garcia for the Cardinals that the Manatees won 1-0. Garcia had a no-hitter into the seventh that was broken up by an infield single by right fielder Travis Ezi. That was the only hit Garcia allowed in his eight innings of work. Villanueva gave up just two hits over seven innings. The Manatees broke through off Andy Cavazos (0-3) in the 12th inning, scoring on a high chopper to Matt Dryer at third. Dryer bare-handed the ball and attempted to cut down the run, but his throw was late. Jeremy Lewis (2-5) picked up the win in relief for the Manatees, and Brian Wolfe earned his fourth save.
On Saturday the Brevard County Manatees pounded out 18 hits and Ty Taubenheim allowed just one run and four hits in a complete game effort against the Cardinals. Taubenheim (9-2) allowed just three runners in scoring position all night, including Joe Mather, who scored on a squeeze play by Rayner Laya in the second inning. Mike Parisi, making his first start for Palm Beach this season, pitched well through four but got in trouble in the fifth. Parisi (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits in the fifth, including a two-run triple by Manatees' shortstop Ozzie Chavez. In total, Parisi gave up five runs on 11 hits in six innings. The Manatees tacked on another run in the sixth, and then scored four times in the ninth off reliever Justin Garza. Andy Schutzenhofer finished 2 for 4 on the night for the Cardinals.
Ty Parker went 2 for 4 with a double and a solo homer to help lead the Cardinals past the St. Lucie Mets 4-3 on Sunday night at Tradition Field. The Cardinals got on the board early against Mets' starter Chuck Smith on a two-RBI single by Jason Motte in the second inning. The Cards added another run in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, Brendan Ryan singled up the middle. That was followed by a walk to Andy Schutzenhofer and a base hit by Matt Dryer to bring home Ryan. The Mets did not score against Cardinals' starter Josh Axelson until the sixth inning when Corey Ragsdale homered. The Mets tacked on another run in the seventh on an RBI-groundout by Jamar Hill to cut the lead to 3-2. Axelson (2-1) allowed just two runs on four hits in 6 2/3 innings on his way to his second consecutive win. Parker's home run in the eighth inning proved to be a valuable insurance run because the Mets were able to score a run in the ninth on a wild pitch by closer Mark Worrell. Worrell escaped with his 16th save of the season.
Simon Williams' first hit as a Palm Beach Cardinal was a big one. Coming into Monday's action 0 for 7, Williams led off the 10th with a home run to center field to break a 2-2 tie and help give the Cardinals the win at St. Lucie. With a 3-2 lead, Jarrett Hoffpauir then walked, and Brendan Ryan followed with a single. After Ty Parker walked to load the bases, Matt Dryer singled to score Hoffpauir with an insurance run and the final tally in a 4-2 victory. Mark Worrell pitched the bottom of the 10th for his 17th save. Cardinals' starter Eric Haberer was once again solid, allowing just two runs in six innings. Rich Scalamandre (1-1) earned the win in relief by working a perfect eighth and ninth. With the Mets leading 2-0 in the seventh, John Santor hit his fourth home run of the year to tie the game at two apiece.
Mets' catcher Yunir Garcia singled in the 11th inning to break a 6-6 tie and give St. Lucie the 7-6 win on Tuesday night. The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-1 lead with four runs in the top of the third. After consecutive singles by Jason Motte and Mike McCoy to start the frame and a sacrifice bunt by Brendan Ryan to advance the runners, Andy Schutzenhofer delivered with a single to left center to plate Motte. Matt Dryer followed with a three-run homer to left, his team-leading 13th of the season. The Mets answered with two runs in the bottom half of the third and then one in the fourth to tie the game. The teams traded runs in the seventh to make it a 5-5 game going into the 10th. Dryer led off the 10th with a walk and was pinch-run for by Jarrett Hoffpauir. After a double by Santor - his second of the night - advanced Hoffpauir to third, Terry Evans brought Hoffpauir home on a groundout. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Jamar Hill homered off reliever Andy Cavazos (0-4) to tie the game at six. Garcia's single in the 11th won it for the Mets. Cardinals' starter Buddy Blair allowed four runs on just four hits in five innings pitched. Blair also walked five. Schutzenhofer, Dryer, and Santor each finished with two hits apiece for Palm Beach.
Joe Mather went 2 for 4 with two home runs and three RBI and Jose Garcia allowed just two runs over seven innings as the Cardinals stayed hot by beating the Dodgers 5-4 on Wednesday night. With a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, Mather connected for a two-run homer off Dodgers' starter Glenn Bott (0-1) to put the Cards up three. John Santor hit a solo shot in the sixth to give Garcia more than enough support. Garcia (3-3) walked just one while striking out five on the way to the victory. The only mistake Garcia made was in the seventh inning when he gave up a two-run blast to Justin Ruggiano. In the top of the ninth, Mather hit his second home run of the game to put the Cardinals up 5-2. It proved to be an important insurance run because the Dodgers scored twice in the bottom of the ninth off closer Mark Worrell. Worrell was able to leave the tying run stranded at second base as he picked up his league leading 18th save.
