Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (July 12, 2005) - Fire hoses were blasting on top of the dugouts in between innings soaking the more than 4,000 kids in attendance on Big Splash Day out at Hammond Stadium, but it was the Fort Myers Miracle who left the Palm Beach Cardinals feeling all wet in a 13-6 drubbing on Tuesday afternoon.
The Miracle responded after finding out Monday night that their offensive leader, Matt Moses, was called up to Double-A New Britain and leaving them without a player hitting over .264. That didn't matter, at least for one day, as the Miracle scored in every inning, but the sixth.
With the Miracle trailing 3-1 in the second, Justin Arneson blasted his first homer of the season, a solo shot over the left field wall. They took a 4-3 lead in the third on an RBI double by JR Taylor and an RBI fielder's choice by Mark Zamojc.
The Cardinals tied it in the fourth, but the Miracle rolled off nine straight runs over the next five innings. They took the lead for good in the fourth on RBI singles from Matt Tolbert and JR Taylor.
In the fifth, the Miracle exploded for four runs. With runners at second and third and nobody out Jose Leger singled home Zamojc and Brock Peterson. Three batters later with the bases loaded and one out Taylor singled home a pair to make it 10-4.
The Miracle made it 12-4 in the seventh on an RBI single from Tolbert and a sac fly from Taylor. The top two guys in the order were perfect on the day. Tolbert was 3-3 with a double, two RBI, three runs scored and two walks while Taylor went 4-4 with a double, five RBI, one run scored and a sac fly.
Seven of the nine Miracle starters collected a hit and scored a run. Peterson doubled in the fifth to extend his hitting streak to nine games.
Miracle reliever Peter Tautor pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
The same two teams meet Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium. The Miracle send RHP Scott Tyler (5-5, 3.83) to the hill against Cardinals RHP Josh Axelson (3-2, 5.35).
