FT. MYERS, FL - Jose Garcia threw eight shutout innings and closer Mark Worrell notched his 20th save as the two pitchers combined to shutout the Ft. Myers Miracle 1-0 on Monday night at Hammond Stadium.

Garcia (4-3) allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out nine in the winning effort. Only three times did the leadoff man reach base for the Miracle against Garcia, and twice those runners were erased on double plays.

Monday was the second time in four starts that Garcia threw eight scoreless innings, with the last time being on June 24 in a no-decision against Brevard County. As a staff, the Cardinals are tied for the league-lead with Vero Beach with nine shutouts.

Ft. Myers' starter Nick Blackburn was also dominant, allowing just five hits and two walks in seven innings while fanning seven.

The Cardinals led off the seventh with back-to-back singles by Ty Parker and Matt Dryer. Terry Evans was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Blackburn was able to avoid any damage, however, as he struck out Matt Pagnozzi and got Simon Williams to hit into a double play to end the innings.

The Cardinals were able to scratch one run across in the ninth inning off reliever Jan Granado (4-2). Brian Martin led off with a double and later scored on a single to left field by Evans for the 1-0 lead.

Worrell came on in the ninth to nail down the victory, but not without a little drama. Worrell walked Ronald Perodin to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and groundout moved Perodin to third, Worrell got Matt Moses to fly out to Williams in center field for the final out.

The Cardinals are back to three games over .500 and have won seven of their last ten.
