Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release

FORT MYERS, FL (April 17, 2006) - Football season may not start for a while, but the final score of Monday night's Fort Myers Miracle -Tampa Yankees game would have been best suited for the gridiron as the Miracle lost 15-10 at Hammond Stadium.

The game was as bizarre as the final score would indicate. The game saw the Miracle have the bases loaded with nobody out in the first and were unable to score. It saw the Miracle strike our four Yankee hitters in the second, but a costly dropped third strike led to three runs. It saw Miracle starter Matt Garza leave the game because his own player hit him in the back with a throw to the plate in the second. It saw the Yankees let back-to-back pop ups drop and the Miracle tie it on a Garrett Guzman three run homer. On top of all that the Miracle trusty pitching staff struggled, the Yankees hit a grand slam, had two five run innings, the Miracle had one of their own and when all was said and done the Miracle out hit the Yankees 16-13 and still lost.

With the game tied at three in the fifth, the best Miracle reliever of the night, Ryan Callahan, gave up his only run on a single, sacrifice, stolen base and an RBI single by Cody Ehlers. Callahan went 3.1 innings allowing one run on two hits while walking one and striking out one. Despite an impressive performance, the one run he gave up was enough for the loss.

The Yankees batted around in the sixth and used three consecutive triples, two doubles and a single to score five runs. They matched that in the seventh inning, capped off by an Ehlers grand slam. He finished the night 3-4 with a double, grand slam, five RBI and two runs scored.

The Miracle tried to make a game of it by scoring five runs of their own in the eighth. Jeremy Pickrel ripped his third triple of the season that scored three. Kory Feiner added an RBI single and Alexi Casilla's fielders choice scored the fifth run.

The Miracle added two more in the ninth on an RBI double by Feiner, who was 2-5 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, and an RBI single from Johnny Woodard.

Guzman finished the night 4-5 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.

The same two teams meet Tuesday night at Hammond Stadium at 7:05 p.m. The Miracle send RHP Anthony Swarzak (1-1, 4.32) to the hill against Yankee RHP Brett Smith (1-0, 0.00). The game can be heard live on Sports Radio 770 ESPN with the pre-game show beginning at 6:45 p.m.
