Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

Vero Beach) - Ryan Carter fell a homerun short of the cycle and the Vero Beach Dodgers ended a 6-game losing streak with a 7-4 victory over Jupiter Monday night at Holman Stadium. The Dodgers won despite hitting into a triple play in the 5th inning. The series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.

The triple play came in the 5th. The Dodgers had already scored two runs and had the bases loaded. Catcher Gabriel Gutiterrez came up and hit a grounder to short. Travis Denker was tagged out trying to advance to third, then shortstop Juan Gonzalez threw to second for the force play and the relay made it first in time to beat Gutierrez for the third out.

The Dodgers fell behind by a trio of runs in the first inning. Edgar Gonzalez doubled home one, Brad McCann doubled in another and a 2-out single from Grant Psomas made it 3-0 Jupiter.

However, Vero Beach struck right back in the bottom of the first. Jason Mooneyham doubled into the left field corner and scored on a Blake DeWitt single. One out later, Carter tripled and then scored on a wild pitch to tie it up.

David Nicholson led off the second with a ground-rule double and scored on Mooneyham's fielder's choice to put the Dodgers ahead. Prior to the triple play in the fifth, Cole Bruce led off with a double and scored on an Xavier Paul single. Nicholson scored Carter, who had singled, when he reached safely on an error. The final run came in the sixth when Carter doubled in Mooneyham.

Chris Malone became the first Vero Beach starter of the year to earn a win. After his rocky first inning, Malone allowed just three hits over the next five frames while striking out three and walking just one. Brian Akin and Kyle Wilson combined to shut down the Hammerheads bats over the final three innings to preserve the streak-snapping win.
