Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (April 10, 2013) - The Fort Myers Miracle overcame a 4-0 deficit to defeat the Jupiter Hammerheads 7-6 in 10 innings on Wednesday.
Stephen Wickens delivered the game-winning single up the middle off of Kevin Cravey to plate Jhon Goncalves with two outs in the 10th. The win improved the Miracle to 6-0. It's the club's best start since 2006.
Miracle starter Tom Stuifbergen gave up four runs in the first- just one was earned- but settled down to pitch six effective innings.
While Stuifbergen was blanking the Hammerheads in the second through sixth innings, the Miracle bats came alive. Miguel Sano atoned for two first-inning errors by smashing a double in the fifth to close the Hammerhead lead to 4-2. Michael Gonzales followed with an RBI sac fly.
Goncalves tied the game against reliever James Nygren in the sixth when his line drive shot to left field cleared the wall for a home run. Angel Morales put the Miracle ahead for the first time when he tripled to score Wickens later in the frame. Eddie Rosario added an insurance run on a sac fly to make it 6-4.
However, Corey Williams could not hold the lead for Fort Myers out of the bullpen. Jupiter scored two runs off of Williams in the ninth to force extra innings. Isaac Galloway belted an RBI double and Ryan Rieger followed with a slow roller to first base and beat the throw to the bag. While Rieger was beating the throw, Galloway was sprinting all the way from second and beat the throw home.
Williams was able to get out of the ninth without allowing any more damage and Adrian Salcedo pitched a scoreless 10th. Salcedo earned the win when Wickens drove in Goncalves to end the game.
The Miracle (6-0) and Hammerheads (0-6) complete their three-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at Hammond Stadium. Join Brice Zimmerman and Adam MacDonald for the Square One Burgers and Bar Pregame Show at 6:45 p.m.
