Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release

PORT CHARLOTTE--An hour's worth of rain kept the Stone Crabs off the field, but on a 1-0 pitch with two runners on and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, Kyeong Kang's line drive to right field brought home Richie Shaffer as the Stone Crabs walked off a winner, 4-3.

"We preach that if we're not getting hits, they're not getting hits," said Williams. "And those two guys made some nice plays out there."Kang's diving catch in the seventh inning--one of two great defensive plays by Stone Crabs outfielders that inning--could have been noteworthy by itself, but his 2-for-3 night at the plate with two walks and the game-winning RBI, made him the hero on a long and rain-soaked night.

The other defensive gem of the inning was an outstretched diving catch by Drew Vettleson that many other outfielders may not have gotten to.

Stone Crabs starter Parker Markel struggled over four innings, allowing three runs on four hits while walking three Marauders, but the bullpen showed its' strength once again as Eliazer Suero and Andrew Bellatti kept the Marauders at bay over the final six innings. The duo allowed just two hits and struck out eight Marauders in relief of Markel.

"The big thing for those guys is when they are throwing strikes, everything else works off of that," said Williams. "Obviously when you get behind things happen, which is what happened against the Cardinals a couple of times when we were getting behind in the count. We got to come to the hitters with a good located fastball and the rest works off of that."

Despite the heroics all around, the Stone Crabs finished the night 3-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base which contributed to the game going into an extra frame.

"It was one of those nights early in the season and we are making some mistakes," said Williams. "Hopefully they are aggressive mistakes that we can work on but offensively we just have to relax, the pressure is on the pitcher not the hitter. It's early in the season, these guys want to show their talent and skills but we just have to relax, get a good pitch to hit and hopefully whack it hard somewhere."

The Stone Crabs (3-3) send Felipe Rivero (0-1) to the mound Thursday for the series sweep, while the Marauders (0-6) counter with right-hander Nick Kingham (0-1).

Thursday is the first Thursty Thursday of the season at Charlotte Sports Park where you can enjoy $1 draft beers until the end of the fifth inning. Also, Thursday is the first Dollar Deal Day of the season where in addition to a $1 draft, fans can purchase hot dogs, fountain sodas and ice cream sandwiches also for $1.
