PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle suffered their first loss of the season, a 7-4 setback at the hands of the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Saturday night at Charlotte Sports Park.
After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Trevor Larnach double, the Miracle did not record a hit until Ben Rortvedt singled leading off the seventh.
Charlotte broke through in the fourth on a Russ Olive two-run double. Olive's hit came with two outs. The Stone Crabs then added two runs in each of the next two innings to build their lead to 6-1.
After Rortvedt's single snapped a stretch of 5.2 innings without a hit, Aaron Whitefield launched a two-run home run to bring the Miracle to within 6-3.
Charlotte answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh before Whitefield finished the game's scoring with an RBI groundout in the eighth.
Tyler Watson (0-1) took the loss in his first start of the season. The left-hander surrendered four runs in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out seven. Hector Lujan pitched the final three innings and allowed three runs.
The season opening series concludes on Sunday afternoon in Port Charlotte. Bailey Ober takes the mound for the Miracle against Tobias Myers.
