Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Clearwater Threshers offense broke out in a big way with 13 hits in their 8-3 win over the Dunedin Blue Jays on Saturday night at Spectrum Field.

Clearwater (1-2) grabbed an early 2-0 lead in the first when Matt Vierling roped a two-run double into the right center field gap off D-Jays' starter Nick Allgeyer (0-1).

The Threshers added to their lead in the home half of the third when Roman Quinn took a pitch from Allgeyer over the left field wall for a solo shot to push the lead to three.

Quinn, who played in his second game of his rehab stint with Clearwater, provided the offensive spark with a 3-for-3 night with a home-run and three runs scored.

The Threshers faced a rally from Dunedin (2-1) in the seventh to close the gap to 4-3 after the Blue Jays plated two runs on one hit and an error.

The Threshers would never give up the lead after they tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the frame after RBI hits from Jake Scheiner, Nick Maton and Madison Stokes.

The Threshers would shut down the Blue Jays in the eighth and ninth to secure the 8-3 victory and their first win of the 2019 season.

Clearwater gave their starting pitcher Alejandro Requena (1-0) a big boost to help him pick up his first win (1-0) of the season. He went five innings and allowed just one run while striking out eight.

The bullpen also bounced back as the trio of Grant Dyer, Austin Ross and Jonathan Hennigan finished off four scoreless frames, and combined for eight strikeouts and one walk.

After allowing 10 walks in their home-opening loss, Threshers pitching only allowed three walks on Saturday night.

Clearwater will look to earn a series split in the finale of the four-game set on Sunday afternoon at Jack Russell Stadium. The contest will be the first true game of 2019 for the Threshers. RHP Andrew Brown (0-0 --) will toe the rubber for the Threshers against Blue Jays' RHP Justin Dillon (0-0 --). First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
