Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (June 7, 2006) - Not every game in the middle of a pennant race is pretty and the only thing that matters is the outcome. The Fort Myers Miracle dug themselves an early 4-0 hole and came from behind as they hung on for an 8-7 victory over the Tampa Yankees on Wednesday night at Hammond Stadium and remained tied for first with the Dunedin Blue Jays with 11 games remaining in the first half.
Danny Powers, making his first start of the season after nine relief appearances, was touched up for four runs in four innings. In the second he gave up back-to-back one out singles to Mark Carroll and Rudy Guillen. With two outs Chris Malec doubled home both runners to put the Yankees up 2-0.
In the third the Yankees tacked on two more off of Powers when Luis Nunez led off with a single to center and with two outs Carroll blasted his first homer of the season over the right-center field wall to make it 4-0. Powers went 4.0 innings allowing four runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out four.
The Miracle offense, however, got it all back in the bottom of the third. With two outs and Alexi Casilla at first Garrett Guzman ripped an RBI triple to right-center. Guzman then scored on Brock Peterson's RBI single. After Kyle Geiger singled Luke Hughes drove them both home with a double to left that tied the game at four. Hughes finished the night 3-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.
The Miracle, who improved to 33-24, took the lead in the fifth with another four spot. Casilla led off with a walk and Guzman reached on shortstop Ramiro Pena's fielding error. With one out Geiger knocked home Casilla to give the Miracle a 5-4 lead. Hughes followed with an RBI single and after a walk to Trevor Plouffe, Deacon Burns' ground out drove home Geiger to make it 7-4. After a walk to Jose Leger loaded the bases, Justin Arneson's RBI single made it 8-4.
The Miracle had to hang on from there. After the Yankees made it 8-5 with an RBI ground out from Brett Gardner in the sixth, they scored two in the eighth. With two outs, reliever Ryan Callahan gave up a double to Hector Made and an infield single to Gardner. Closer J.P. Martinez relieved Callahan, but gave up a two run single to pinch hitter Cody Ehlers that made it 8-7. Martinez struck out Pena to end the inning.
Unlike Monday night, when Martinez squandered the ninth inning lead, he retired the side in order on Wednesday to earn his ninth save of the season and keep the Miracle tied for first.
The Miracle now head out on an eight game road trip that leads them to the All-Star break. It begins Thursday night at Joker Marchant Stadium against the Lakeland Tigers. The Miracle send LHP Justin Jones (1-0, 1.47) to the hill.
