Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL (August 21, 2006) - Whether it's hammering homers or hammering nails, painting the corners or painting a home, Miracle Baseball has done it both on the field and off the field in 2006. With the Miracle once again in the middle of a playoff race on the field, they will take some time to help out off the field on Wednesday, August 23 and help build a home in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity.
Nearly 20 Miracle staff and players will be at 1703 NW 19th Street in Cape Coral and trade in their baseball gloves and batting helmets for workman gloves and hardhats. From 10:30 - noon on August 23 Miracle Baseball will begin building the foundation of a house through Habitat for Humanity.
"Our organization takes pride in the relationship we have with the community," said Miracle General Manager Steve Gliner. "Southwest Florida has reached out to us over our 15 years in the area and in return we do everything we can to give back to the them. When this opportunity came to us, the number of people that wanted to help, from the players down to the staff, made me proud to be the General Manager of this club."
Habitat for Humanity of Lee County is a non-profit organization dedicated to eliminating substandard housing in Lee County. Through the use of volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Habitat builds simple, decent housing for families who otherwise could not afford it. Since 1982, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County has built more than 650 homes, but thousands of families still live in substandard or overcrowded housing in our service area. Habitat for Humanity of Lee County is the third largest Habitat affiliate in the nation. In 2006, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County received Habitat for Humanity International's Affiliate of the Year Award for 2005.
"Habitat for Humanity is sincerely thankful to the many volunteers that help us each year," said Terri Rausch, Habitat for Humanity of Lee County Volunteer Coordinator. "We appreciate the help Miracle Baseball is providing us and are very excited to have the players and staff helping us out in Cape Coral."
Miracle Baseball puts a lot of pride in their community involvement, requiring that each member of the front office choose a cause that is important to them and gives back to that organization. The philosophy has been in effect since the Miracle first came to Southwest Florida 15 years ago and the Miracle have given back to many organizations over the years including the Boys & Girls Club, Harry Chapin Food Bank, Foundation Fighting Blindness, along with local high schools and chambers.
