Vero Beach Devil Rays News Release

(Viera, FL) - The Brevard County Manatees knocked out 14 hits and defeated the Vero Beach Dodgers 10-7 Monday night at Space Coast Stadium. David Nicholson turned in his second straight 4-hit game in a losing cause for the Dodgers. The series continues Tuesday night at 7:00 PM.

Brevard jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings against starter Jonathan Figueroa (0-7). The Dodgers lefty walked five batters in four innings and allowed six runs, all earned, on seven hits. One walk came with the bases loaded, as did a hit batter.

Vero Beach made an effort to come back, however. After picking up single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, the Dodgers turned it up a notch in the seventh. Cory Dunlap singled in Eloy Gutierrez and Drew Locke knocked in Nicholson. Two more runs scored in the eighth on a Nicholson double and Russ Mitchell single. D.J. Jackson then led off the ninth with a pinch-hit home run, his first for the Vero Beach Dodgers.

Brevard had built too much of a lead, however. Reliever Albenis Castillo walked Milko Jaramillo with the bases loaded to force in one run. That knocked him out of the game, but Ryan Crew greeted Adam Thomas with a single that scored two more and gave the Manatees a 9-2 lead at the time. Crew ended up with four hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

The Manatees added another run in the seventh and Adam Heether doubled for his fourth hit of the night. Charlie Fermaint singled him home. Ramon Troncoso held Brevard scoreless in the eighth to become the only pitcher out of four to record a scoreless appearance for the Dodgers.
