Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, FL - The two starting pitchers in Friday night's game at Hammond Stadium had ERA's of over six. So of course the two pitchers went out and shut down the opposition's offense with the Fort Myers Miracle coming out on the short end in a 3-1 loss to the Daytona Cubs at Hammond Stadium.
Miracle starter Jose Mijares, making his second start of the season, entered play with a 6.14 ERA, was spectacular through four innings. He allowed just one base runner to reach as far as second and retired the first seven men he faced. In the fifth, with the Miracle leading 1-0, however, he gave up a one out single to Sam Fuld. Issmael Salas hit a fly ball to right that Jeremy Pickrel had trouble playing and the ball bounced over his head for a double which put runners at second and third. After Mijares walked Joe Simokaitis, Colby Miller made his 2006 Miracle debut. Pitching for the Miracle for the first time since 2003, he walked the first two hitters he faced to force in two runs. He finally settled down getting Danny Gonzalez to hit into a fielders choice which scored a run and got Ryan Harvey to ground out to end the inning, but the damage was done. Mijares went 4.1 innings allowing three runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven, but took his second loss of the season. Miller went 2.2 shutout innings allowing one hit while walking two and striking out one.
The Miracle, who fell to 20-15, couldn't muster anything off of Cubs starter Matt Weber, who came into play 0-3, 9.13 ERA. He gave up a two out solo home run to Garrett Guzman in the first inning, his fourth of the season, but nothing else. He hurled 5.0 innings allowing one run on four hits while walking one and striking out five, earning his first victory of 2006.
The Miracle threatened in the fifth inning against Weber when Trevor Plouffe doubled into the right field corner, but he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. The next hitter, Kyle Geiger, doubled to left field, but was left stranded when Johnny Woodard and Deacon Burns struck out to end the inning.
The doubles were the final base runners for the Miracle as Cubs pitchers retired the final 14 Miracle hitters.
The same two teams meet Saturday night in the finale of the four game series. The Miracle send RHP Matt Garza (5-0, 0.92) to the hill against Cubs RHP Justin Berg (0-3, 5.35). The game can be heard live on 91.5 Kingdom FM. It is gas giveaway night where the Miracle will give away $500 in gas coupons courtesy of Edison Oil. It is also the voice of the Miracle, Sean Aronson's 29th Birthday. Gifts will gladly be accepted.
