Fort Myers Mighty Mussels News Release
FORT MYERS, Fla. (July 29, 2012) - The Fort Myers Miracle used the long ball to win the finale of a four-game series with the Brevard County Manatees 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Hammond Stadium.
Josmil Pinto belted his ninth home run of the season in the fourth with two outs to put the Miracle up 4-1.
Michael Gonzales, pinch hitting for Steve Liddle, broke the game open with a grand slam in the fifth off of Thomas Keeling to put Fort Myers ahead 9-1.
Matt Summers battled the heat to earn his first win in a Miracle uniform since being called up from Beloit. He pitched five innings, allowing just one run and six hits.
The Miracle were able to knock around Manatees starter Jed Bradley, who is one of the Milwaukee Brewers' top prospects. The lefty was roughed up for 10 hits and six earned runs in just 4 2/3 innings. He walked six.
The Manatees took an early 1-0 lead in the second, but the Miracle answered with two in the bottom of the frame when Levi Michael and Liddle hit back-to-back RBI singles to put the Miracle ahead.
Pinto's homer and Gonzales' grand slam put the game out of reach. The Manatees scored two in the seventh against Nelvin Fuentes, but the Miracle got the runs back in the eighth on an RBI double by Lance Ray and a sac fly by Anderson Hidalgo.
Michael and Pinto each had three hits. Angel Morales went 2 for 3 and scored three runs. Ray also had two hits.
With the win the Miracle won the series 3-1 and earned a season split with the Manatees, 4-4.
The Miracle (47-58, 19-19) will travel to Daytona to start a seven-game road trip on Monday. The first game against the Cubs is set to start at 7:05 p.m. Join the "Voice of the Miracle" Brice Zimmerman for the broadcast beginning at 6:45 p.m.
