Charlotte Stone Crabs News Release
DUNEDIN -- A six-run second inning sent the Dunedin Blue Jays to an 8-2 victory over the Charlotte Stone Crabs on Sunday at Florida Auto Exchange Stadium.
Three Blue Jays hitters connected for home runs against Stone Crabs starter Albert Suarez in that fateful second frame. Suarez (5-7) lasted four innings and was charged with six runs - all earned - in dropping his third consecutive decision.
Only one day after Charlotte utilized a nine-run seventh inning to secure a victory, Dunedin worked over Suarez for six quick runs in the second inning. Marcus Knecht led off the frame with his 12th home run of the season, a solo shot that broke the scoreless tie. Two batters and two singles later, Jack Murphy belted the first pitch of his at-bat over the center field wall for a three-run homer which made it a 4-0 game.
After a two-out single from Jonathan Jones extended the inning, Ryan Schimpf connected for his 14th home run of the season which capped the six-run rally.
The Stone Crabs had a Major League mound opponent to contend with as well. Toronto Blue Jays righty Brandon Morrow, making his first start of a rehab assignment, was able to work three scoreless innings on just 24 pitches. Morrow was placed on the 60-day Disabled List on June 13 with a strained left oblique. He allowed two hits and a walk, but induced two double plays and struck out two batters.
Once Morrow's day was done, Dunedin welcomed back ace Sean Nolin from a six-week stint the disabled list as well. Nolin (8-0) tossed 2-2/3 innings of scoreless baseball to earn his eighth consecutive victory to open the season. He walked one and struck out two batters.
Both Riccio Torrez and Luke Bailey collected RBI's as Charlotte finally broke into the run column in the seventh inning. Steve Tinoco had two hits and scored a run, finishing the series 6-for-13 with a pair of RBI's and three runs scored.
The Stone Crabs return home on Monday to open up a four-game series against the Tampa Yankees. Left-hander Enny Romero will take the ball in the opener. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m.
