JUPITER, Fla. - The Fort Myers Miracle avoided a sweep with a 5-1 win on Sunday afternoon over the Jupiter Hammerheads at Roger Dean Stadium.

After facing the minimum through the first three innings, Jupiter starter Hunter Adkins surrendered a run in the fourth. Tanner English led off with a single into center and Nick Gordon walked. With Trey Vavra at the plate, an Adkins wild pitch advanced both base runners into scoring position. Vavra then lined a base hit to left to score English, 1-0.

Jupiter tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of throwing mistakes. Rony Cabrera kicked off the inning by coaxing a lead-off walk from Miracle starter Keaton Steele. After Steele (7-11) struck out Rodrigo Vigil, Brian Schales hit a chopper to third base. Sean Miller's throw pulled Vavra off the first base bag for an error. Jeremias Pineda then hit a sharp grounder to second base. Alex Perez flipped to second for the force out, but Gordon's throw sailed wide of first base. Cabrera rounded third and scored, 1-1.

Steele went six innings and gave up just one unearned run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Steele has now thrown six consecutive quality starts.

In the top of the seventh, the Miracle pulled ahead. Max Murphy led off with a double down the left field line off Jupiter reliever Jose Quijada. Perez laid down a sacrifice bunt to push Murphy to third. Then, Joe Maloney lifted a 2-2 pitch from Quijada (1-2) down the right field line. John Norwood made the catch, but Murphy tagged up from third base, 2-1.

The Miracle opened up a four-run lead in the top of the eighth and sent nine men to the plate. A wild pitch from reliever Andy Beltre scored English with the bases loaded. A.J. Murray picked up an RBI single and Murphy added a RBI with a sac fly, 5-1.

Nick Anderson tossed two scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth out of the bullpen. John Curtiss worked a perfect ninth.

The Miracle (67-65, 33-30) begin a three-game set with the Palm Beach Cardinals at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Fans can listen to every pitch on MiracleBaseball.com with the 'Voice of the Miracle' Brice Zimmerman beginning with the pregame show at 6:10 p.m.
