Durham Bulls News Release
Durham, NC - Tampa Bay Rays' left-hander Matthew Moore, the top pitching prospect in all of Minor League Baseball according to Baseball America and ESPN, is expected to join the Bulls on Friday and start that evening for Durham against the Toledo Mud Hens at 7:05 PM at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The 22-year old has spent the entire season at Double-A Montgomery, where he was 8-3 with a 2.20 ERA and a league-leading 131 strikeouts in 102.1 innings pitched.
"This is yet another of the tremendous talents the Tampa Bay Rays continue to send our way," Durham Bulls General Manager Mike Birling said, "If you enjoyed watching the likes of David Price, James Shields and Jeremy Hellickson pitching here, you'll want to be here Friday to see Matt Moore."
Moore has led all of the minor leagues in strikeouts for the last two seasons, notching 176 in his first full season of professional baseball at Bowling Green (Low-A) in 2009 and an eye-popping 208 in only 144 innings at Charlotte (High-A) in 2010. His 131 strikeouts are currently fourth in all of minor league baseball this season.
Moore entered the season as the #15 prospect on Baseball America's Top 100 list but has since moved to third behind Washington Nationals' catcher Bryce Harper and Anaheim Angels' outfielder Mike Trout. He is ranked second on ESPN's list behind Harper.
